You should watch: "The Boys" even if you're not a fan of superheroes

The Boys premiered in July 2019 on Amazon Prime. To say the show kicked off with an explosive start would be an understatement. (You'll get the pun once you watch it.)

Going in, viewers would have some idea that "The Boys" isn't your "run of the mill" superhero series, in line with the likes of Marvel's productions. But this knowledge still won't prepare you for the utter madness of the show.

As the story goes, superheroes are reverred by the masses for their work protecting and saving. They're the squeaky-clean keepers of peace and justice. At least on the outside. In actuality, being a superhero is all about the numbers. It's a business. And as many of us know, running a business can be ruthless.

The superheroes themselves are... questionable? Okay, I won't sugar-coat. They are messed up. Deplorable, depraved, and at times, disgusting. But that's the beauty of the show. It defies the generic superhero formular. Going against the grain has served the show well, resulting in a show that's gritty, gory and glorious.

Along with being brilliantly  written and directed, it's an absolute visual treat. From the graphics to the way each scene has been orchestrated and brought to life, The Boys definitely serves as a gift to one's senses. It's "kick ass now, what even are questions?" aesthetic is exhilarating. It's no surprise that the show has gone on to garner critical acclaim.

In all the chaos and absurdity that is this series, it still manages to tackle real and sensitive issues. Like dealing with grief, emotional and physical trauma and the struggle to separate fantasy from reality.

The Boys definitely takes things to the extremes, and in some ways, that can be a turn off for some viewers. It would be remiss and irresponsible of me to toot the shows horn without including a caveat. As mentioned above, the show does deal with sensitive topics and may allude to or contain scenarios, situations and/or visuals that some viewers may find deeply disturbing or triggering.

If you're looking for a show  that's recipe is off-kilter, zany badass and bloody, then you should definitely give "The Boys" a watch. The show is set to release its third season on July 8th on Amazon Prime.
