How Zomato Started ?
Zomato, India's No. 1 Food Delivery App was started as Foodiebay in July 2008 and was renamed Zomato in 2010 and then in 2011 it was changed to Zomato Media Private Limited. Zomato was established by two IIT Delhi, students Deepinder Goyal and Pankaj Chaddah. Deepinder Goyal used to belong to a very middle - class family. Both used to work as analysts for the consulting firm Bain & Company.
Foodiebay was started as an online directory for restaurant menus with a team of 6 peoples. In the year 2008, It became the biggest restaurant directory in the Delhi NCR. After two years of their service, Foodiebay renamed it as Zomato in the year 2010. By the year 2011, the company moved to cities like Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune and Ahmadabad. By the year 2011, the company after creating a monopoly in Delhi NCR moved to cities like Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Bangalore, and Ahmadabad.
Zomato received approximately INR 167, 000, 00 ( USD$ 16.7 million ) from “Info Edge India” formly Naukri between the year 2010 - 2013. Sequoia, Info Edge, and VY Capital raised USD$ 60 million for the this growing Food Delivery App.
By the year 2012, Zomato started operating in Qatar, South Africa, United Kingdom, UAE, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines. In the year 2013, countries like New Zealand, Turkey, and Brazil were also added to the list. Zomato acquired the Italian service Cibando and Portuguese company Gastronauci in the year 2013.
In the year 2015, along with Sequoia, Info Edge and VY Capital, a Singapore based investment company Temasek brought in USD$ 110 million to Zomato for building a new customer database and for expanding the operations. Then in the year 2015 Zomato aquired the MapleOS.
Zomato turned profitable in all the 24 countries by the year 2017 and also crossed 3 million orders in one month. After the funding from Ant Financial Services in February 2018 Zomato’s evaluation reached approximately USD$ 1.1 billion.
As of 2022, Zomato is available in more than 10,500 cities and 39 countries. This made Zomato Media Private Limited the newest Indian unicorn company.
