A Third Route to Render All Things Regret Pointless

Usually, the ending of a story leaves you feeling either happy, or sad. The happy ending that we all want isn’t always the case, unfortunately; could it be justified that our individual ideas of happiness often interfere with those of others and so life can’t have everything for everyone at the same time?

Yesterday didn’t end well, it caused you a lot of heartache; even suicidal thoughts came in like an alien invasion, and so you are looking back at it with an evil eye. But, would it instead have ended in a way that you now fantasise would have favoured you? A difficult question to answer indeed as today isn’t looking so promising either. You deserve your fair share of happiness, but you seem to be fighting a losing battle with this life.

Still, you managed to squeeze yourself out of those suicidal thoughts; didn’t you do that so you could have another go at this life thing? You being complacent with how you handled a situation dates back to a long time ago, and all the regretting needs to stop now. Yes, it would have been great if yesterday ended the way you now fantasise about it, but has that been helping you retrieve what it has stolen? They say that everything happens for a reason, but often the reason keeps itself a mystery so as to mess with the mind. Because, what if there was instead a third route for life to take? What if the story had an alternate ending that would have left you feeling indifferent now? There are some cases where something happens and it leaves your emotions confused – neither sad nor happy. The alternate ending is here to render all the regretting pointless, because even if you had made all the seemingly brave and ingenious moves that you now fantasise about, something else might have happened in spite of it all. Or you prefer to rule out that possibility?

Happiness is your goal, just like it is everyone else's, but yesterday’s sad ending has you marooned in this fantasy world, and it is a real shame because today is actually beautiful. The countryside has a different kind of peace and quiet – the beautiful open views; the sounds of birds chirping; the sound waves flowing above the lake. It is the peace and quiet that you are after, but bringing a couple of friends along will definitely make it less lonely and therefore a good escapism from these memories. Doesn’t sound like much, but it is otherwise a great start towards a last attempt at getting back to reality. Your significant other may only be a few miles down the road and all they need is for you to step harder on the throttle as they are getting impatient. A little effort could unlock possibly the best thing that will ever happen to you, and today has many other possibilities for happiness than just a significant other. These possibilities are dispersed all around you; unfortunately they won’t throw themselves at you just sitting idly. You need to stand up and get them!

For so long, you have been blinded by these memories, and today you regain your vision. Because, you probably know a few more things now than you did a minute ago, and you are most definitely braver. The problem is that you can’t “un-know” things; once it gets in, it alters your perspective. So, are you being fair to yourself when you look back at yesterday’s ugliness from the perspective of today’s beauty? The way you handled yesterday was just the best you could do in that state of mind. You are in a superior state of mind to yesterday’s; shouldn’t you at least be taking pride in the fact that your wisdom has ascended to these incredible heights?

Get over it! Even if you had made all these moves that you now regret you didn’t make then, you don’t know what else would have happened instead. Life isn’t some lottery where you would know for certain today what you stood to win yesterday had you made the correct bet; why beat yourself up about things you can only imagine but wouldn’t be guaranteed to be true anyway? Today is beautiful, and it is time you embraced it!
