Is it true that life has been found on Venus?

The year 2020 will be remembered not only for negative events, but also for positive ones. One of them is the publication on September 14 of the results of research by a group of scientists from Cardiff University on the atmosphere of Venus, which concluded that it is very likely that life is possible on the planet. We are not talking, of course, about a highly developed civilization with smartphones and nuclear missiles, but about the possible existence of the simplest bacteria, similar to those that exist even on Earth in the harsh conditions of great depths and pressures.

To begin with, it is necessary to understand - what is called life? By definition, life is an active form of matter, capable of metabolism and reproduction. These processes require a certain environment of suitable temperature, pressure, and substances that a living cell will feed on.

The life forms known to us could not unambiguously exist on Venus. After all, the average temperature of its surface is over 400 degrees Celsius, and the pressure is 90 times higher than on Earth. All the devices that mankind launched on the hottest planet in the solar system, quickly collapsed, barely reaching its surface. And those of them that were able to film and transmit to Earth what was happening around them, broadcast lifeless desert landscapes with aggressive weather conditions.

So what was the basis for the big news? The surface of Venus is extremely uninhabitable, but its atmosphere is another matter. It was it that the researchers observed and at an altitude of 50-60 km traces of phosphine, a substance consisting of hydrogen and phosphorus, were found. Its peculiarity is that it can appear either in the conditions of hot interior of the planet, or be the result of vital activity of living cells. No volcanic activity has been detected on Venus that could lead to the release of these substances, so it has been concluded that there is life. It could be assumed that phosphine appeared in the atmosphere at a time when volcanic activity was stronger, but the peculiarity of this substance is that the average lifetime of a molecule is 16 minutes, which means that there is a source of its constant reproduction in the atmosphere.

Of course, phosphine is only one of the possible signs of life and we may simply not know other sources of its origin except living cells. That is why additional research will be conducted now, and several expeditions are being prepared to study this very question in more detail.

Thank you all for your attention to my publications, I hope you liked it, come again.

Sincerely Eduard!
