Microsoft announced new Bing and Edge based on ChatGPT - details

Microsoft has unveiled a new Bing and Edge browser with ChatGPT support based on the GPT 4 language model. The announcement was made at an exclusive event at Microsoft's Redmond campus, where CEO Satya Nadella demonstrated the company's future plans for AI.

Bing

Features

After Google unveiled its ChatGPT competitor, Bard, Microsoft announced a brand new version of its Bing search engine and Edge browser. Microsoft said that Bing and Edge together will offer new ways to surf the Web, and its artificial intelligence-based technology will change the definition of information search. Users will be able to get realistic answers to any questions they may have, according to the vendor.

Microsoft says Bing will directly answer questions and encourage users to be more creative. The updated search engine will run on a "new" next-generation language model from OpenAI, which has been customized specifically for search. This time, the company has integrated a new system called the "Prometheus model" to increase relevance and offer the latest answers.

Numerous search queries were demonstrated during the presentation. A query to compare Mexican artists led to a list of results with AI-generated answers in the right-hand panel with annotated links (very similar to the knowledge panel on Google's search results page). The search results page provided by Bing gave the impression of merging traditional search results and ChatGPT results, offering users better alternatives.

Bing also offers a separate chat section in the top menu. A search query in which the host asked the chatbot "travel tips for Mexico" offered a detailed list of things to do and an itinerary for the trip in response. The chat interface in Bing is very similar to ChatGPT, with the only difference being the addition of tabs with sources and reviews. The new Bing Chat can translate in up to 100 languages.

The updated Edge browser has a different look, rounded corners and a smooth user interface. The Bing Chat interface can be found on the right sidebar of Edge, making it easier for users to navigate without having to go into Bing. The Edge browser's ability to break down information has also been noted, especially offering concise summaries of PDF files. Users can also ask Edge to help them compose LinkedIn posts with just a few prompts. The browser can also help users with the content and length of posts.

Availability

Bing is already available for desktops in a "limited preview." Users can try a few queries and register for full access. It will become available to millions of people on both desktops and mobile devices in the coming weeks.

Microsoft Edge has a new set of notifications designed to convince users not to download Google Chrome. These messages were found in the Edge browser running on the Windows 11 operating system.

Microsoft Edge runs on the same technology as Chrome, but is more trusted by Microsoft.

Google uses a similar strategy when users navigate to its services in Edge. Opening Gmail, Google Search, and other Google services in Edge prompts users to try Google Chrome. It is likely that both Google and Microsoft will continue to try to keep users on their Chrome and Edge browsers, respectively.
