Potato Podimas Dish

Potato Podimas, is another scrumptious traditional variety of poriyal. The literal meaning of podimas is ‘mash’. It is also known as Urulaikilangu podimas which  is a popular side dish prepared from boiled potatoes satueed and slightly mash with onion and green chillies. It is served with Sambar or other Kuzhambu and rasam.  In Potato Podimas, the main spiciness is from green chilly and the  tempering is done with mustard seeds, split urad dal, green chili, ginger and curry leaves.  After tempering the cooked and crumbled potatoes are tossed along with salt and turmeric. Finally grated coconut and Coriander Leaves are added. This spicy and flavourful podimas tastes good with tomato rice, curd rice and rasam rice. This dish should be cooked tactfully and gently. 

 

Why to try this dish -

The potatoes are the good source of  fiber, potassium, vitamin C, and vitamin B6 , all support heart health. Potatoes contain significant amounts of fiber and  Fiber helps to lower the  cholesterol in the blood, thereby decreasing the risk of heart disease.

For a perfect potato podimas, use lots of onion. Never  over cook the potatoes as it will retain moisture and become too gooey.
