The New Strategy of Scammers in Africa

According to Collins English Dictionary, scam is an illegal trick, usually with the purpose of getting money from people or avoid paying tax. And person involved is called scammer.Β

Since scammers and fraudsters are everywhere. Everyone has to be very careful. In Africa, you canΒ  receive a fake call that some unknown person has pushed money into your mobile money wallet. Then ask you to check your wallet and reverse the money. As soon as you unlock your accounts you are hacked. A scammer or fraudulent person can defraud you by getting access to your mobile money pin. This is the scammers new strategy. This how they work. When these fraudsters call you they sound very real in other to get every detail from you. They will mention your full name and give you a very confidential information first to win your trust. This is makes it very hard and difficult to confirm whether they are real or not. Sometimes they don't call but rather send you messages and the messages they send looks like it's coming right from your service providers that is MTN or Vodafone or whatever bank you are banking with. A lot government workers and people have fallen victim to them. They normally pretend they are calling from the head office of your service providers or bankers. They came up with this new strategy of fraud after when the government asked all their citizens to link their ECOWAS CARD to their bank accounts details. When they call you, they claim to be working at the bank you are saving. And they will ask if you have merge or link you Ghana or Nigeria card with your bank details. However, if you have already done it then they will inform you it wasn't confirmed on the system so you have to do it again. Then he will ask you to rush to the nearest bank to finish it since that very day is the deadline to complete. Since you might be busy that very moment and can't go to the bank then he will suggest to you how he can help you register or link your accounts with your card online. The only thing he will need to complete the online registration is to send him the front and back of your Ghana or Nigeria card or visa card so he can do the update. He will ask you to do that by sending a snapshot of your card via WhatsApp and that will be your end. Every single money in your accounts will disappear. These scammers can use the snapshot of your card to acquire for loans or other service or some fraudulent activity without your consent. By the time you realise the police is at your back.Β

Anybody who receives a call should first calm your down, think thru and alert your banker for them to take the appropriate action against them. Again call your network providers or bankers to change your pin before they take every single money in your account. Sometimes its dangerous to use other means to confirm their identity since they can create fake website, true caller and customer services. You can report to the nearest police station.Β
