The US Navy disagrees that the destroyer Chafee violated international rules

"The statements of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation about the interactions between the ships of both countries are incorrect," the Navy Times quoted a statement from the command of the fleet.

It points out that, according to the US military, the interaction of Chafee with the Russian warship "was safe and professional."

"While the destroyer USS Chafee (DDG 90) on October 15 was carrying out routine operations in the international waters of the Sea of Japan and was preparing for flights (carrier-based aircraft), a Russian destroyer of the Udaloy class approached it at a distance of 65 yards (about 59, 5 meters) ", - said the American military.

At the same time, it is emphasized that although Russia issued an international notification for pilots and mariners (NOTAM / NOTMAR) about the closure of this area for exercises, at that time it had not yet entered into force. And the American warship had every right to operate in this zone of the Sea of Japan.

The statement also notes that "USS Chafee has acted in accordance with international rules and customs at all times."

"The United States will continue to operate at sea and in the sky wherever international law allows," it says.

On Friday, it was reported that the American military attaché in Moscow was summoned to the Russian Defense Ministry in connection with the incident with the destroyer Chafee, which, according to the Russian military, tried to violate the Russian state border in the Sea of Japan.

"The military attache was pointed out to the unprofessional actions of the crew of the US Navy destroyer Chafee, which grossly violated the International Rules for Preventing Collisions at Sea and the provisions of the Russian-American intergovernmental agreement on the prevention of incidents on the high seas and in the airspace above it in 1972," the Defense Ministry said in a statement RF.

The Russian military department said that the defense attaché at the US Embassy in Moscow was invited on Friday evening to the Main Directorate of International Military Cooperation of the Russian Ministry of Defense.

"The representative of the US armed forces was informed of the position of the Russian military department in connection with an attempt by the US Navy destroyer Chafee to violate the state border of the Russian Federation in the Peter the Great Bay area on October 15," the message says.

On Friday, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that the large anti-submarine ship "Admiral Tributs" prevented the attempt of the destroyer Chafee to cross the Russian state border in the Sea of Japan, ousted it from Russian territorial waters.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, on October 15, Chafee, which has been operating in the Sea of Japan for several days, approached the territorial waters of the Russian Federation and attempted to cross the state border.
