Terminologies for Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Pregnancy
pregnancy is the state of carrying a developing embryo or fetus within the female body. The period from conception to birth after the egg is fertilized by a sperm & then implemented in the lining of the uterus. It develops into the placenta & in later stage, it is called embryo.

Beginning from first day of the woman's last menstrual period.

Gravida
Gravida is defined as the number of times that woman has been pregnant.


Pariety or para
Para is defined as the number of times that she has become birth to a fetus with a gestational age of 24 weeks.


Labour
Labour is a physiological during which fetus membrane umbilical cord and placental are expand from the uterus.


Episiotomy
A surgical cut made at the opening of the vagina during child birth for prevention of any complications and prevention of rupture of tissue.



Purperium
The period of about 6th week after child birth during which the mother's reproductive organ return to their original non pregnant pregnancy.


High risk pregnancy
A pregnancy is consider high risk where there are potential complication that could affect the mother, baby or birth.


Thrombolytic
It is also called anticontraction medication they are given good result in premature birth. The medication are used to suppress labour.
